WHAT IS IVL...EXACTLY? Here's An Explanation, Ripped From The Pages Of The Official 'Integrated Visual Learning Procedures' Manual!

with Dr. Ingersoll at the present time") Noss & Steven Ingersoll

“Welcome to Integrated Visual Learning (IVL), a new and exciting optometric-based vision learning process that combines proven vision therapy techniques with integrated cognitive, sensory, and motor skill activities. The material is in the manual is full of novel ideas and exercises. The chapters which follow contain background information on human vision, memory and cognition, vision screening, IVL instruction design, IVL instruction execution, and how to change instruction plans to react to performance variations. The IVL process is designed to change peoples’ lives. The impact of successful IVL treatment is dramatic in the lives of children and families you will be treating. Some of the children you will deal with may have already experienced the stunting effects of psychoactive drugs such as Ritalin. Vision therapy techniques have been practiced since the late 19th century. The objectives of vision therapy have been to improve vision and attempt to improve academic performance.

The history and practice of vision therapy reveals that the results of therapy have been somewhat inconsistent and unpredictable. Although the immediate corrective effects of vision therapy may have been very positive, one child completing a course of traditional vision therapy treatment becomes an effective learner, while another appears to make equal progress but is never able to learn to read effectively and continued to exhibit low levels of achievement or unacceptable behavior. Dr. Steven J. Ingersoll, of Bay City, Michigan, has developed a systematic treatment process. This process not only treats vision inaccuracies, but through the use of multiple levels of motor skill, sensory, and cognitive activity integration, ensures that accurate eye movements and visual memory processing are rapidly driven to a subconscious level, while at the same time cognitive skills are enhanced. The result is improved visual processing that can be sustained when confronted with multiple task loading that individuals experience in the real world. This unique process is called Integrated Visual Learning (IVL).”

So, is this process really worth a reported $300,000 annual curriculum fee? Much more from the manual, only from Miss Fortune.

“One way that I saw Steven Ingersoll manipulated the financial records was by putting a curriculum development line in GTA's budget. Ingersoll made the curriculum development payments to SSM, in addition to the management fee. Steven Ingersoll told me he did this because he did not want to make the management fee too large. Because I was in charge of the curriculum, I know that the school's curriculum was not designed by SSM or Steven Ingersoll.”

“Based on my familiarity with the people involved, I know that Mark Noss, the owner of the current management company for GTA, and Brad Habermehl, the current GTA board president, have been friends with Ingersoll for many years.”

“One way that I saw that Steven Ingersoll manipulated the financial records was by putting a curriculum development line in GTA’s budget. Ingersoll made the curriculum development payments to SSM, in addition to the management fee. Steven Ingersoll told me that he did this because he did not want to make the management fee look too large. Because I was in charge of the curriculum, I know that the school’s curriculum was not designed by SSM or Steven Ingersoll. Only a small number of students, approximately 5%, received out-of-classroom instruction based on Steven Ingersoll’s Integrated Visual Learning method. Integrated Visual Learning is a teaching and learning technique rather than a curriculum.”

And just how exactly does Ingersoll accomplish this? Where is the research and evidence to back this statement up? Everyone I have talked to who worked for him or received his vision therapy described 50 year old technology that was ruled ineffective 50 years ago and curriculum that ignores critical learning standards. One special ed teacher who worked with former GTA students assured me they were not cured of their ADHD at all. Even with what I have seen, and I still have no farging clue what IVL exactly is, I know it's snake oil quality "therapy."

    1. Hey, I'm just quoting for the Book of IVL, copyright held by Mark Noss and Steven J. Ingersoll!

  2. I'll tell you exactly what IVL is. Without a doubt, in my opinion, IVL is just another BS way for these thugs to make money. Does anyone ever wonder why such a wonderful discovery like IVL has never hit affluent public schools? Let me answer that by stating that it's a SCAM!

It is all truly quite sad that these money-craved devious a$$ holes take advantage of of the public in this way.

I wonder where this 300k a year stipend is going now? If the ties with Ingersoll and all his BS were truly cut, we would not even be talking about this. The IVL scam would be something of the past and would never be allowed to pollute public education ever again.

On a side note, I have heard that Mr. Cleland is most definitely still stalking around BCA. Does anyone know what the hell his job title is? Perhaps the title should read "101 ways to scare the living sh$t out of women and still be employed by a school!"

  3. Truth is IVL was never much implemented, it was just a way for Mark Noss and Steve Ingersoll to pull money from state funds and make it look legitimate. Let us not forget the LLC'S that are running Bay City Academy and Grand Traverse Academy. Brian Lynch, at Bay City Academy son-in-law to Mark Noss who is running Grand Traverse Academy. IVL is owned by Mark Noss and Steve Ingersoll. And if you think Steve is not capitalizing on these schools still, guess you need to read the fine print, or was then fine print conveniently erased, better believe more than the shadow knows.
And the whole Patrick Cleland thing, still connected with the school creepy. This tells you they are still paying these guys not to talk.
You guys think Michigan taxpayers are stupid, well I am here to tell you, we are smarter than a Fifth Grader. And what matters to us most, is that the money you have stolen and the money you are still stealing, gets put back to educating children. Stop the money flow to their big homes, obnoxious vacations and extravagant lifestyles.

    1. I completely agree that Noss and Lynch are attempting to still profit off of IVL.

Like the individual commented before, I'll bet they are still going to attempt to force feed this crap down parents throats. It's just a matter of time before an "IVL Specialist" is brought back in to these schools. What a scam.

    2. It looks like the foundation is already in place --

September 18, 2015 GTA Board Meeting minutes:

“The Strategic Plan makes it clear that GTA is committed to the use of IVL. We have three developmental optometrists on the Board with expertise in IVL who have volunteered to donate some time to asses our current process.”

November 20, 2015 GTA Board Meeting minutes:

      Public Comment –

“Kerrie Kornexl stated that a check for $2,100 was paid to Dr. Brad Habermehl’s Vision Therapy Group for IVL evaluations which were provided earlier in the year. She said it was a conflict of interest for the board president to accept money from the Grand Traverse Academy for any reason, but more particularly because, when the evaluations were originally presented, the board was told they would be free. She also pointed out that Dr. Habermehl used the volunteerism as one reason he felt a special board meeting should be held to present the evaluation findings. Mrs. Kornexl believes that Dr. Habermehl should return the money to the school.”

    3. I think I just threw up in my mouth when I read this post. Your telling me that a public school board is really buying into all this?!

In the end, it's really not surprising at all that this is happening at GTA. I wonder how long before the implementation process begins at BCA?

A friend of mine, who is a parent at BCA/NCA, informed me that Lynch acts as though he's still involved with principal/Superintendant decisions (of course for 6x the salary).

He holds parent meetings and is pushing his agenda on to the principals at both schools.

As far as I have read, that is extremely illegal to do as a management company owner. His only main job is to oversee the financial aspect of the school.

Obviously he will directly profit, via under the table payments from Noss, for IVL at BCA. Apparently he is above the MDE and laws that govern public education?

I have also heard that the staff turnover is AWEFUL at these schools. For some positions, Lynch's schools have gone threw 3-4 teachers already this year! At times, they work for months without filling these positions......which again, is illegal and must stress the crap out of staff and administration.

Must be a fun place to work!

  4. Where is the Michigan Department of Education? What are they doing to help stop this nonsense? Are they for children and teachers or are they for big business? There is a serious problem here and if you don't acknowledge it, then you don't deserve to be watching over the education of children. Get your head back in the game, stop being bullied by the people backing charter schools and start thinking about what is best for all. Stop throwing money at bad ideas.
